PLANTATION KEY -- The Coral Shores High School baseball team split the four games it played over spring break in a Pompano Beach tournament, defeating teams from Tallahassee and Riviera Beach.
The Hurricanes started the tournament with a 4-1 win over Maclay Gardens from Tallahassee.
"Brandon Joyce pitched four strong innings for the win," coach Pat Meyers said. "He had relief help from a strong bullpen."
Battle Ground High, from Franklin, Tenn., then ran past the Hurricanes, 12-3, a game in which Meyers reported no standouts.
Then things got worse when Coral Shores faced a strong Daytona Beach team.
"Seabreeze whipped us 17-5 and again there were no standouts on our team," he said.
The Canes waited for their final game of the tournament for the real heroics as they beat Riviera Suncoast 6-5 on a Josh Sands' grand slam in the top of the seventh inning.
"After Josh put us ahead Brandon [Joyce] got the save for winning pitcher Jordan Izaguirre," Meyers said.
The Hurricanes (10-6-1) were to face St. Brendan at 4 p.m. Tuesday, after the Free Press deadline.
St. Brendan is undefeated in 4A District and 11-3 overall, while the Canes are 0-3 in district play.
