State could lose flood insurance
Bill creates conflicting state, federal mandates, leaving county in a quandary

The Florida Keys is no stranger to threats of losing its flood insurance coverage, but now the federal government is threatening to boot the entire state from the National Flood Insurance Program.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) sent Gov. Rick Scott a letter March 30 stating that if he signs House Bill 503, Florida may be suspended from the flood program.

Thank you Governor Crook

Thank you Governor Crook Scott... More business for your friends in the insurance industry I guess... For those few that can afford the rates. Since most of Key West is in a flood zone, last one out, shut off the Conch Train.

I'm praying for

the cat 5 everyday.........

Good, shut it down.

Teach this terrorist governor who wants to rape and pillage our Keys with development a lesson. Pull the insurance.

FEMA is trying to protect you people, but all you're concerned with is the almighty dollar. You'll learn when the Big One hits (and it's coming).

Mac, this is an easy way for the 1% to buy all the Keys property

on the cheap! All of us people that have mortgage's will not be able to afford Lords of London's going rate on flood insurance. They are the only company that will take the risk to insure Florida property anymore. When you have a mortgage you are required to have flood insurance or the bank buys a policy for you at a rate usually 100 times the rate you would get from FEMA. Obviously we all know what pocket Rick Scott our governor is in! This is good example of Social Darwinism!

Rick Scott is no friend to animals either!

This bill is what the Florida legislature is really working on rather than the real and important issues of the day. At least the bunnies and chicks are glo free this year! Happy Easter to all! May God protect the animals and people from this legislature, we are all in danger from their "great" ideas! http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/07/rick-scott-approves-artif_n_140...

Be careful what you ask for...

While your reaction may satisfy some inner Oppositional Defiant streak, all mortgages require flood insurance. Your position would only permit cash buyers to purchase or own property in the Keys (or all of Florida). This reminds me of "We have to burn this village to save it!"

All Mortgages DON'T require Flood Insurance

Only properties with Buildings in Flood Zones are required to have Flood Insurance if there is a Bank mortgage. Not Private Mortgages. Not ALL properties in the Florida Keys are in Flood Zones and most of Florida properties aren't in Flood Zones.

Not ALL properties in the Florida Keys...

Thanks for the correction. So only MOST locals will lose their homes.

Our local government is sure

Our local government is sure working hard at losing FEMA for us. Then our state reps way way up there in the capital somehow mysteriously got involved in the illegal downstairs enclosure issue down here in the Keys, probably didn't even know what one was up there but somebody came up with the means to get their attention.
