Chamber eyes public agency pay
Wages study shows private sector disparity

From supervisors and technicians to receptionists and janitors, Keys Energy Services paid many of its employees more than their Florida Keys counterparts in both the public and private sectors last year. Among public employers, the power utility paid the highest salary for 12 out of 17 rank-and-file categories, according to the Key West Chamber of Commerce's 2011 Wage and Benefit Survey.

EverybodyKnows

Everybody knows a pig wearing lipstick is still a pig! Oink, oink!

Teachers

And teachers get paid crap, to take crap from students, administrators and parents. Then we wonder what's wrong with the world ? You don't even need a college degree for most of these jobs listed....just a connection !

Big Doe

Virginia has been getting top dollar for decades as well as all those perks that equal her salary. Also I know some years ago of a TDC office girl whose husband (ex now) used to brag about her $104,000. salary. These agencies are all partially funded by tax monies. Thank-you Ms. Panico for bringing this topic up again so we can bring more attention to the scrutinization of all the tourist and business chamber's financial wheelings and dealings here in the keys. FYI - Virginia your temper tantrums are the talk of town (office & road rage)!

This is disgusting

The Chamber needs to take a look at itself and its members. I've worked in private industry, government, and education, and I can tell you that there's a lot more lying, cheating, stealing, fraud, nepotism, sexual harassment, tax-cheating, misleading advertisement, and general sleaziness in private industry. I send a whole lot more money to the bank that holds my mortgage than I do to local government and schools, and I don't think very much of my tax money at all goes to yacht club and country club memberships, bar tabs, prostitutes, Lear Jets, etc. like it does in private industry. Just because private industry pays its employees crap and treats them like throw-away commodities doesn't mean that government should, too!

Keys Energy employees are

Keys Energy employees are steady job types. Chamber employees are world wide type drifters, partying their way around the world's hot spots.

Glass Houses

Just wondering why do we never see Virginia Panico and her salaries/benefits/perks as well as her staff's disclosed. For that matter what about all the 'Chamber of Commerces' in the Keys as well as the TDC? Let's start there and compare those with other private sector and public counterparts then move forward. Get it all on the table. Fair is fair.

this is rediculous as most

this is rediculous as most people, like myself, haven't gotten a raise in a decade let alone a 5 percent raise in just 1 year. wonder how much they got in raises over the past decade... could explain a lot when it comes to increased costs of energy and how little our tax dollars go these days. these folks need a serious reality check!

Union vs Private Sector:

When you compare Union and private sector that is NOT an accurate comparison the local unions have been organized for years;Keys Energy (41-years), FKAA (38-years), City of Key West (36-years), that's apples and oranges. Better yet, when you compare two jobs and assign a salary you should include the total picture, the of number of years the Union employee has been in the position and the number of years the private sector employee has been in the position, that would be a true comparison. Furthermore who the hell is Virginia Panico to tell any public agency what to do in their budget. It's one thing for the public to ask questions and give suggestions but the final decision is with the Board or Commission, that's what we elected them to do. Panico thinks shes still a part-time Commissioner with fer arrogant and dictatorial attitude towards elected officials and residents in general, she needs to shut it down. Her nose is too long as it is now! Let's see who comes out of the box first on behalf of their Public Employees, don't sit up there and let the chamber cut them to pieces. Weee'll see!!! As KWTN says "we don't make this stuff up". Stay tuned.

Let's See the Names

What do you expect when those entrusted by the taxpayer are the friends and family of those being hired? I would love to see an organization chart (with names) on how these positions relate within these organizations. It is obvious in many instances such as the High School, but would love to see this documented.

Where can I apply?

How sad that 14 of the 17 positions listed for Keys Energy earn more money than most teachers. And no one is asking those employees to take furlough days. Sad, sad, sad...

Wages

Until Ms. Panico opens her books and can show that she nor any of her employees have received a raise in the last 5 years, nor receive matching funds (as in annual salary) in a top heavy retirement plan, meaning that she and only she receives, please just shut up. You are a non-profit that receives public funds that pays YOUR salary in excess of 100k a year, FULL benefits and funds your outrageous retirement. Please, please Key West Citizen, before you print one more thing about salaries, whether it be public or private enterprise, hand Virginia a FOIA request and be done with it already. It is time for the ole harpy to go and for the dues paying members to be able to see what they get from our oh so illustrious Chamber, which is nothing. Drop into their office one day, unannounced, after 10 or so, she can't be bothered to be there before at least 9, and simply look and listen. You will hear that gravely, marbles in her mouth, voice screeching at someone and employees mortified that she is the leader of OUR Visitor Center. Go back to New Jersey Virginia, if they'll have you!

Ding Dong...

It's one thing for the Wicked Witch of Key West to meddle with City affairs, but when she starts casting her evil eye at the cushy salaries of bubba utilities, she could be in for a dunking in hot water.

Her Wickedness seems to forget that she's more highly (and overly) paid than Norma Jean was. And she forgets that battle over the Chamber's secret slush fund.

A word of advice, honey. Sniff around all you want, but if you get too close to the sacred FKAA, you'll get burned.

VIRGINIA PANICO & CHAMBER of COMMERCE:

The Chamber of Commerce should release Virginia Panico's salary and benefit package it would scare you but they are privitage and are not subject to the public records law. There was only one time it was made public and that was years ago when Commissioner Bethel questioned the survey and Panico's salary, he was able to get hokd of an anonymous package dropped off to him. Panico's salary and benefits were huge then imagine now. Any public agency who is a member of the chamber can request this information, all members should know what their Director makes. YOU WOULD BE SURPRISED!! Mark Rossi should provide this under the guise of fair play, don't wait on Charlie Bradford he is anti union employees at Keys Energy, he sits up there and cmpares them to himself and there is NO COMPARISON, they don't get to spend their lunch hours at the Yacht Club drinking and sipping on cocktails with the high and mighty, check him out one day, you can't stop them habits overnight especially when it's a problem. Let's get back to the Chamber someone needs to call them out under fair play, let;s see what Commissioner or Board member for a public agency has the "cajones" to do that to be fair to their amployees. LET'S SEE WILL COME OUT AND DO THE RIGHT THING. A few that come to mind that have "cajones" are Commissioners, Rossi, Wardlow' LOpez and Yaniz and Mayor, Cates. Public Agency Board Members would be Barry Barroso, Peter Batty, Robert Dean, Brian Barroso, Melba Wagner and Toni Appel. County Commissioners, Wiggington, Murphy, and Carruthers. Let's really see who comes out for fair play on behalf of Public Employees and ask for Virginia Panico's salary and benefit package. This would probably be the talk of the town for many a days and freak everybody out. Let's see!

And What is Panico's Pay??

Virginia Panico has had a pretty cozy position for the past couple of decades. Furthermore, the Key West Chamber of Commerce accepts tax dollar funding. How does Ms. Panico's pay compare with private sector directors of comparable budgets and payrolls?
