Big ship tests waters
Cruise line sent Voyager-class in and out of port

A Voyager-class cruise ship made a brief stop in Key West waters Tuesday, testing maneuverability within the island's main ship channel, which is believed to be too narrow to accommodate newer vessels of its substantial length and width.

Royal Caribbean's 1,021-foot Mariner of the Seas did not dock in Key West, but came through the channel as far as the turning basin about 7...

A Large Vessel?

Just to give people an idea of the size of that ship, the aircraft carrier I served on in the Navy was 1,047 feet long, this ship is only 26 feet shorter than a aircraft carrier !!

Headline

When I read the headline, I assumed this would be an article about Rossi trying out his new hot tub. No, it is just Rossi, Cruise ship flunky Fitton and the Southernmost Wicked Witch, continuing to ignore the reality the this town has a carrying capacity and pouring 10,000 people onto the island at once will destroy the very attraction that brings visitors (including cruise ship tourists) to Key West. Of course, they have John "I love Cruise Ships" DeSantis to provide air cover with his consistent misleading statements and lies. You would think the editor would care, but hey, we are all one cruise ship family here! Todays lies involve his statement that "Supporters say they don't expect passenger counts to get much higher, and that the bigger ships are designed to house more amenities, such as rock-climbing walls, nightclubs and other features." Well, have you heard of google? Disney Magic, one of the mid size ships that calls here often has a passenger capacity of 3690. Allure of The Seas has a capacity of 6360, although they sometimes state 5500 since this is double occupancy, rather then max. So I guess 6360 passengers is "not much higher" then 3690???? Of course, DeSantis gets away with the lies, and the 3 stooges get away with destroying our island. I wonder if it is time for a referrendum capping the number of cruise shippers in port to 4000. Bring em on one ship or three, but no more then 4000 at once. How about it City Commission? Anyone have the cajones to take on the mighty Swift and his minions?

Did it Run Aground?

If it did not run aground, then that is your answer to widening or deepening the ship channel. Not needed. Secondly, ships have depth finders. A big cruise ship has multiple units and knows the depth of the water over every square meter of its hull. Does anyone think any cruise company would risk damage (much less taking it out of service) to a billion dollar ship if there was ANY real risk?

Who approved this?

Who said we were Ok with this "test"? What if it didn't go well? I am sick of all of this backroom dealing the stripjoint owner/commissioner (only in Key West or maybe Nevada!) and the (clears throat- chokes a bit)city manager along with now Virginia Panico and the cruise people.

Just a test???

Mr. Rossi and Port Dir. Jim Fitton (hired by his navy buddy, Jim Scholl) must think the public can't read through this TEST. Jim Fitton said he didn't see a need to advise the Commissioners of the test but he sure did not miss notifying and inviting Virginia Panico. This was a slap in the face to the Commissioners, Jim Fitton should be fired and leave with his buddy School to their next port of call. As for Panico they need to let her fall by the wayside and get other people in this community involved with isssues that effect the residents, instead of her one track mindset. When Panico was on the Commission, she was terrible at best.

Ship Test run

Testing for safety is a very sensible idea. It seems like the cruise industry learns from recent problems. A job well done

Implications are disturbing...

The implications of a secret test are a little disturbing. Why was Virginia Panico in the loop and city commissioners not? This wasn't just any vessel, this is the first ever of a certain class and the largest vessel to have entered the harbor. There is far from concurrence that this is a direction in which Key West should be moving. Virginia Panico should not be setting the course for the city.

Large in size only

It may be a larger ship, but it actually carries less passengers than the Carnival Magic, which is alrady here. The Citizen probably should have mentioned that.

Do not repeat a lie. It is

Do not repeat a lie. It is still not true. Google the ship capacities. It carrys many more customers. facts our your friend... Unless you are Virginia,Fitton or Rossi

Um, No.

You really should take your own advice before posting. It might prevent you from looking so stupid. Carnival Magic (Dream Class) double occupancy is 3646 with max capacity of 4632. Mariner of the Seas (Voyager Class) double occpancy is 3114 with max capacaity of 3807. At double occupancy, MOS has 532 less passengers and at max capacity has 824 less passengers than the Carnival Magic. Again, very easily obtainable by your own advice - Google.

Jumbo, Dumbo and Rusto

The jumbo cattle ships are coming whether the citizens of Key West want them or not. This article reveals who is running the City. The Chamber of Doom, a bar owner, and the trinket sellers while the complacent commission members and mayor turn a blind eye. These folks profit hamsomely while ignoring the wishes of the citizens of Key West.

Ships

Not sure if you understand that a LARGE number of people are employed because of ships coming to Key West. Maybe you are not, but maybe the staff at your favorite store, bar, restaurant or your neighbors are. Do you want them unemployed, are you that selfish?

We are worried about the

We are worried about the other 93 percent of our economy more. Don't forget the facts please, ships are 7 percent of our tourism revenue. They are NOT that important unless you own one of the handful of businesses that suck up that 7 percent. Notice DeSantis never brings that up anymore! Virginia must have cast a spell.

I have many friends

in the bar and restaurant business, and not one of them gets any business from cruise ships! The ONLY bars that do are the ones close to the pier and the majority of THAT is t shirt sales or one drink in a souvenir cup. The OWNERS of the bars are making a few bucks, the fast food restaurants are, but the only "stores" that are, are Israeli T shirts stores. These people do not eat in restaurants, they have no time to do so for one thing. It has been shown over and over again that cruise ship passengers spend less than $25 once they get off the ship, and most of that goes to garbage made in China. All you have to do is watch one ships time here. They get off, they get back on. Most carrying no shopping at all. A few, maybe one out of 5 carry a cheap plastic 'thank you' bag most likely from the "Everything is $5" store.

Go sell crazy somewhere else.

We're all stocked up here. This community was better off without the cruiseships. The majority of citizens do not want the cruiseships here. The commissioners are not elected into office so they can push their personal agendas against the wishes of the majority. The jobs created by the cruiseships being here are low level jobs with little or no benefits. These workers are typically working two or three jobs to make ends meet and shack up with two or three tenants in a ramshackle apartment to be able to afford the rent. This is not a stable foundation to build a local economy on. It breeds an unstable transient work force and erodes the core of the community. Your moniker claims twenty years in Key West. Surely you can't beleive this island is better off today than twenty years ago. The tourism machine combined with overdevelopment of every square inch of this island has stripped the charecter from Key West. It's merely a tired old whore with her best days behind her. Is the reef better off today than it was twenty years ago? No. Just another victim of the cruiseship industry. Those pushing the cruiseships down our throat line their pockets with wads of green at the expense of the community. They are in fact the "selfish" ones.
