Publix to open in new plaza
Company won't comment on existing grocer

The Key Plaza storefront that recently housed Albertsons supermarket will become a Publix, according to permits filed with the city's building department, but company officials will not say what will become of the existing Publix.

An April 20 building permit describes a $145,000 renovation project to "remodel the existing Albertsons into a Publix, with new flooring, painting...

Publix's in the Plaza

I bet who ever made that decision wasn't here when we were all flooded and their original store was nice and high and dry.

The new slogan...

Publix- Where shopping is too expensive!

A new Greenwise market

It's a GREAT idea! Moving the current PUBLIX over to a larger building is a major undertaking...but will make it more accessable for everyone. Opening one of their new GREENWISE organic markets at the "old" locatiion.....IS GREAT! I will shop there.....all the time! This is the PERFECT location for it! And...don't worry about the people who used to go to the old Whole Foods/Waterfront market. It...was filthy as well. They'll be fine. If they don't want to "ride their bicycles...uptown".....they can drive their Mercedes. What else can we worry about?

Let's Hope

that Publix gives the former Albertson's location a thorough cleaning and brings in new freezers, equipment and shelving because the ones currently on site flooded in Wilma and were never replaced. The whole site should be scrubbed clean from top to bottom. This seems to be a step backwards for Publix in Key West unless they are adding a Greenwise Store in the space being vacated by Publix. The coy "no comments", redirection and deflection by Publix officials when asked about the plans for the Searstown location are childish and silly. The company knows damn well what the plans are. Corporate America; where common sense no longer lives and lunacy rules the day!

I agree. It is a step

I agree. It is a step backwards for Publix. The whole shopping center needs a good power washing. The bums and drunks that hang out on the sidewalks also need to find a new home. (maybe Higgs Beach, I heard that is getting a makeover) $150k is not enough to clean up that mess that is Key Plaza. I don't mind paying more I just want clean, and friendly without having to be hassled by bums and drunks. Don't look for full "Greenwise" store. Do you really think the people from downtown that could not support Waterfront Market will drive or ride their bikes "all the way" uptown to patronize the it?

Key Plaza

I totally agree with you about Key Plaza being a dump. I know a lot of people who refuse to go there because of constantly being harassed by the bums. The place has definitely gotten worse since they did away with Security.

Sad Day

I was in Publix yesterday. Prices are up and sales items are down. We're seeing the inevitable result of lack of competition already.

Rockland

I can't wait until the sopping center on Rockland is built!

"sopping center"

Is the sopping center on Rockland Key going to be a Wal-Mart? B

Correction

It is going to be a Wal-Mart Express.

Exactly...

Exactly...
