Homeless group seeks more funds
SHAL budget for running shelter and outreach program increases by $184,000

The nonprofit managing Key West's overnight homeless shelter has given the city a proposed 2013 budget that includes an increase of $184,000, drafting a plan that totals $677,066 to run both the shelter and a mobile outreach program that hit the streets in November.

The Southernmost Homeless Assistance League's (SHAL) financial plan for "homeless services" does not include r...

Yes, lets fire teachers, cut

Yes, lets fire teachers, cut pensions, raise taxes and cut back on garbage collection, but lets give the homeless a 30% increase in the budget. We all know that 80% of these people do NOT WANT HELP. They want a free ride and we give it to them. The numbers speak for themselves. 12 people out of 883 people moved into permanent housing. That is like a 1% success rate! These are the people filling up our jails, scaring away our tourists and sponging off our community. Lets cut the budget 30%, not raise it.

Homeless

There are homeless people every where there is desirable weather. But the shelters and the homeless groups are not enforcing the fact that the homeless help is to help not enable. You can't get a cabanna at Higgs beach, Rest Beach or Smathers beach unless you promise the "bums" that they can have your leftovers once the party/picnic is over. And them you have to scrub/dissinfect the area because you cewrtainly don't want your family in their filth. The coalition should help or donate the funds to the school system!

There is a solution....

Stop feeding the homeless. I know it sounds unChristian but remember Maslow's Pyramid of needs. You give them the warm Key West weather, a roof over their head and something to eat, then their fundamental needs are met. Stop feeding them.

homeless must go!

no more money for the homeless, these people have zero intention of trying to get back on their feet we are wasting hundreds of thousands of dollars on the shelter and the mobil out reach, we should be discouraging people from comming here and being homeless, and health benifits for the volunteers? are you kidding me, i work two jobs so does my wife and we dont have health care . its outragous!!!!

can we please pull all

can we please pull all funding for both KOTS and SHAL already? i'm so tired of the resident bums that are constantly begging in front of Circle K, CVS, and along the waterfront. i thought we'd established begging zones, but apparantly that's not being enforced either. time to end all support for the full time resident bums... send them packling!!!

We have no money for the

We have no money for the schools but I bet they will find the money for the bums. This is ridiculous. It is time to take back the island from these lowlifes. If the shelter was used for the purpose of helping that would be one thing but many are permenant residence that do nothing to help themselves out of their situation. They spend all day hanging at the beach, beg some money, puke of the bridges and check into the shelter only to start their next eventful day the next morning. Throw them to the fishes or give them tickets home. WE do not want them on our island any more.

Duh mayor trying to pull a fast one?

Any money for that "expert consultant" needs to be pulled as a line item and fully examined by the entire city commission. I suspect this is an attempt by duh mayor to slip his Prof Harold Hill homeless expert pal in under the rug with a fat fee.

Remember the Yellow Shirts!
