Navy, county agree on land use plan

The Monroe County Commission on Tuesday signed off on land use rules that limit development, but at the same time recognize private property rights, around Naval Air Station Key West on Boca Chica Key.

Great News Long Time In Coming....

The conflict regarding land use around Boca Chica goes back to at least the 1970s. This is a significant agreement that only goes to show that two very divergent parties with conflicting opinions can reach compromise. As a proponent of property rights myself, I'm very discouraged by those residents who disapprove this initiative. You have the right to develop your property in accordance with the county zoning rules in place at the time of purchase. To think you have the right to demand to develop your property from light industrial to a residential category without impacting the rights of others around you is selfish and short sighted.

Actually zoning laws change

Actually zoning laws change all the time. You must comply with current zoning, not what it may have been when you bought the property. If that were the case, my neighbors who's grandparents bought the house could tear it down and build a high rise. If you do not like what current legislators are doing regarding zoning, you can vote them out of office.

You're right...

Zoning can change. It does take process and at least for Boca Chica, the Navy is unwilling to allow zoning in the immediate area around the air field to change from light industrial to residential.
