No Name power issue still in play
Public Service Commission may play a role in decision to add island to the grid

Keys Energy Services may not have the last say on whether commercial power will be brought to No Name Key.

Staff for the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) issued an opinion Thursday recommending that it, as the state regulatory agency, rule on whether commercial power should be brought to the island currently powered by the sun and generators. But by the time the PSC h...

No Name poles are going up now

Every time there was a new obstruction thrown up to grid power on No Name Key, the Citizen duly reported it. Guess what? The poles started going up yesterday (Monday, June 11), and there was nary a word or photo in the paper. I guess it's only news when the obstructionists say it's news.

Secession ?

Maybe they should block off the bridge to No Name Key and stage a secession - oh wait that's been done

Secession won't work

you nosey bastards will find a way to screw with anyone.

I Agree With 666

If you bought out there in the quiet lands of No Name, you knew what you were getting into. The community out there is one of people who wanted an alternative lifestyle in a time of Peak Energy. It's an experiment in progressive living, off the grid, figuring a way to live in the days of Peak Oil and Peak Growth.

You say what?

QUIET you say?!? Obviously you neither live there or ever visited during the summer when all the gas and diesel generators are running full blast. Oh yea, that is real environmentally friendly too.

No Name Power

"I can't imagine a more urgent motion," Assistant County Attorney Derek Howard said. "We were surprised by his ruling." Friends and neighbors, can you imagine that Monroe County has no more pressing issue than to continue four decades of discrimination against No Name Key? I smell a rat. I wonder when the County and BOCC Members Murphy and Nugent will stop the farce at taxpayers expense to protect their buddy Alicia "Pirate" Putney so as to perpetuate her lies. Former County Attorney told the BOCC what it did not want to hear, that No Name's residents are (DUH!) allowed to bring their homes commercial power and she nearly lost her job over it. The new County Attorney, and his staff and their highly paid (those being yours and my dollars) could not figure out (or so they said to their bosses) the 'complex' issue of No Name and had to sue the entire island to ask a Judge to explain Putney's Law to them. Thankfully the Judge realized that neither Keys, nor the BOCC, or surely not Pirate Putney, have any say in whether you, or the No Namers, are allowed power. My guess is that the County will continue to try and hurt these poor people but my other guess is that the No Namers will not stop until the discrimination against them has ended and they can go about their lives in peace. I wish them well and support them in their fight.

SeaShell, while I agree with

SeaShell, while I agree with you that we have MUCH more important issues to worry about, I do not agree with your claims of discrimination or calling Ms Putney names. Everyone who bought property there were fully aware it was off the grid and had no expectations of being brought on the grid. If they cared about this, they could have bought elsewhere or looked into the issue first. This is all about property owners looking to make a fast buck since bringing in electricity will increase the mainstream appeal and make the homes more valuable and marketable. I could care less if they bring the electricity or not, but lets at least admit what this is all about and not try to demonize a woman who is trying to maintain the off the grid lifestyle she bought into when she bought her home. In terms of the BOCC, the County's plan states that utilities on No Name will be "discouraged." They are following the plan. If you dont like it, change the plan or vote for someone who will. This is about money and some new residents looking to make a buck.

I'm sure there's less aggravating ways to make a buck

Mr. Wizard

I agree, but not everyone is

I agree, but not everyone is as smart as you and me Sal.

I'm smart

but you my friend are brilliant.............

Couldn't agree more

Couldn't agree more with all points raised by 666. Well said. Thank god that vile language, demonization, and name-calling are not the basis for how the land use plan is interpreted.
