Schools chief unveils budget this week

At the crowded political forum held Friday in Key West, some School Board members were stuck watching one candidate blast the district for sacking dozens of teachers in order to balance the budget.

That didn't happen, board members say, despite what School Board District 3 candidate Mark Peterson said at least twice into the microphone Friday at the Conch Flyer restaurant in...

Blogger Homework Assignment:

Andy saying "We didn't cut teachers, but rather positions," is supposed to make us all feel better? If you cut "teaching positions" by attrition or otherwise, you in turn cut teachers- the ones we have now (at least half of the cuts) and the ones who can't even apply because "positions" won't be available next year. But the point is you DID cut instruction yet again for the third year in a row. Why can't this Board own that? It drives us crazy. It's like when they said that Principal Gracie (Marathon) needs to practice "distributive leadership" (Keynoter quote). What the heck is that? Do you mean, leaders need to "act appropriately". This Board and top leadership aren't making sense- I agree that we need changes, but the truth is, no leadership can step in now and offer an "acceptable" plan for cuts to the tune of $6 million. And that is the whole point: we got here somehow under the current leadership. BUT HERE'S YOUR HOMEWORK BLOGGERS: COME UP WITH AND POST A PLAN ON HOW TO ELIMINATE $6 million from the budget. Go ahead, I want to hear your solutions.

John Dick has really lost it!

There haven't been district cuts period! Just a couple of years ago we had a superintendent, deputy and that was it! Today we have a superintendent + deputy superintendent + chief of staff + chief financial officer - what the hell is this district doing!?! Pretty soon we will have an extra chief of whatever at each school. If we want to save money cut 2 of the 125,000.00 dollar "chiefs" and put back some Indians (teachers). PS- I also heard they (district staff) are again taking a field trip to the Ritz Carlton costing $50,000.00 this summer!, to add insult to injury it's the THIRD year for this. Somebody on the board needs to wake up!!

Doesn't matter who you vote for!

Doesn't matter who you vote for. It will be the same old same old. You can vote against Griffiths and put Talbott in office who is backed by Jara, Acevedo and Bosco who were instrumental in the complete sweep under the carpet of the KWHS students who ransacked the high school. Their lack of action is deplorable. The school board needs to issue a letter of apology to the students at Marathon High School who were not allowed to walk with their class last year. Not only did the KWHS students walk, they were flaunted as the best of the best. I think not! There were excellent students in Friday's graduating class that went unrecognized, yet the vandals had all the starring roles. Let's not forget the picture in the Conch Color of the graduates skipping school, drinking and flipping the bird. We were told that "it" was taken care of in house. I bet those marathon students would have appreciated the same consideration.

Bill O'Reilly

Are you sober? What world do you live in? No one “ransacked” the high school. You need to select a different expression or understand the term “ransacked”. There was action taken, and it has to do with children, so you are not privy to what that action was (School Law 101). Why would the school board apologize to the students of Marathon High School? The principal of Marathon made the decision. The school board does not involve themselves in day to day operations of a school (School Based Management 101). How were they flaunted? Who went unrecognized? Starring roles? Wow, you’re reaching. The valedictorian, salutatorian, the class president spoke, as they have for years, and two students from the "Class of 2012" gave spiritual prayers. Is that a starring role or flaunting? I would hope you know how students are selected to speak. As for the bird, it was at a beach off school grounds and it is none of the school’s business (Bill of Rights,December 15, 1791). The school, if they did take action, would be wrong. As for your distain for Mr. Griffiths, Mrs. Talbott, Dr. Jara, Mr. Acevedo or Ms. Bosco, you really need to seek psychological help. Finally, what is deplorable is your non-factual rant. It is people like you who have no clue as to any of the facts but try to spin it to some tragic scene. No Spin, Just Facts, Bill O’Reilly

Great to know

I had heard horror stories about dead fish, bodily fluids, eggs, and overturned trashcans. So glad to know that these rumors are actually untruths.

Facts and untruths

Dead fish and overturned trash cans are a fact. Bodily fluids and eggs are untrue.

Semantics School Board

Whether the people left for retirement or moved, it's still 40 less teachers that will be in the schools next year. Yes it's good that you didn't have to lay them off, but it's still less people next year helping kids learn, the purpose of schools I thought. C'mon man!

I always back up everything I say with data and charts that real

So John Dick, whose heads rolled after the second bad audit??? It is one thing to be a bombast and spout out your thuggish remarks on the radio, and quite another position to refuse to back up the statement. Looks like a good political sound bite, with nothing to back it up

Yellow Journalism

This article is incredibly slanted. Too bad Gwen is too lazy to fact check or she'd see Petersons comments are on the money. Plus, why do we only get press from FireAndy when Peterson isn't even in his district? How about hearing from the candidates who care about the kids, instead of those collecting and stealing taxpayer money for two decades. But if MCSD is historically overstaffed - as Griffiths claims- isn't that his fault in his 20 years on the board? Which one is Andy's mistake-- layoffs, or overstaffing? Dick also continues to lie- he is continually full of incorrect stats - like MCSD being the top salaried teachers in the state (try subtracting the furlough days math genius)- and how can he support the admin staff and simultaneously claim "heads have to roll"---- only when Dick, Griffiths and Jarra are gone can the focus of schooling return to instructing students.

Not Board Members Yet

They are only candidates now Mr. Dick. By the Grace of God, we will change two seats this time and the balance as soon as possible. The pride taken in making the claim that 20 teachers "retired" is lost in the fact that they are being systematically pushed out by the board's move to reneg, yet again, on a commitment that they have repeatedly made to the teachers who dedicate there lives to educating our youth. This is, in essence, that if you commit to being in this district, we commit to helping you with insurance in your retirement. However, we are at a day where, due to the inability of the board to find collaberative resolutions to the present budget climate...all bets are now off. Thanks for the 30 years of service, but again the board has shown that their word and commitment to those in service is beyond the binding 3 year contract that they waded up and threw in the trash. As a result, we go into next year with roughly the same amount of students and 49 less teaching professionals than ever before. My question is this, what happened to the million plus dollars that were to be saved after throwing all the maitenance and custodial workers to the wolves? The results were a substantial down grade in the quality of life to those workers and their families, but the actaul savings...if any...seems to be a slippery fish. And itemized breakdown of line item costs...which any small business in the county could simply provide by a key stroke has been explained to be, by the Stuperintendent, as a $500k additional expense. So this board cuts by ego, in the dark, to the detriment of the teachers, the community..and worst of all...the students.

How about this change

Maybe a better change would be the union leadership dont you think?

All would be lost

If you change the Union leadership, you would lose the only people who know the contract, can follow the numbers and approach conflict resolution in with innovative solutions which keep the students and teachers interest at heart. Change the Union leadership, hell. If we do that, we might as well surrender the flag and put John Dick's face on our money. Are you kidding me? His type of leadership hasn't worked real well in the Soviet Union or Cuba either.

Layoffs

Please post a list of the employees who were fired as a result of the budget cuts. According to this article, at least 20 were. Does the attrition % include both those who retired or left the district? Clear cut facts are needed as this is misleading for all sides. And ask Andy what the other 46% of the budget went to in 2002 if it did not go toward instruction in an educational institution under his watch. What was the attrition rate in 2002, due to people leaving the district, and why? The defense rhetoric needs to end. It smells of accusing the teachers of being greedy hogs at the trough- MCSD administration that he oversees came up with the current salary schedule and the board voted yes on it. Starting salary is higher in the Keys, higher up the ladder according to years of experience it is comparable to other districts-factor in cost of living and you will have your answer to the question above and why we were hemorrhaging teachers then. It is the job of the board to know what is going on. If someone accuses them of laying-off teachers to balance the budget, provide exact numbers and names of who they fired-MCSD is small enough, they should know. But there is no right answer from our politicians on the board as they know they fired good people to make the cuts. CYA Bubbas
